“What is a nurse practitioner? And all about strokes.” with Diana, a Nurse Practitioner

Diana (MSN, FNP-C, RN) is a stroke nurse, an emergency room nurse, and now a nurse practitioner who is currently the stroke coordinator at a comprehensive stroke center.

In the first part of the episode, Diana talks about the nurse practitioner role. Diana says, “I think overall the role of a nurse practitioner can be summarized as a leader in improving patient outcomes, providing evidence-based care, and allying with the interdisciplinary team to improve quality of care.” The nurse practitioner role is dynamic. It is a newer role, so it is still in its formative years, and current nurse practitioners, like Diana, are taking a leading role in forming the profession.

Diana also talks about strokes. Diana’s episode is really interesting and important because she talks about the aspects of strokes that she thinks aren’t talked about enough. She mentions that, “we only have one brain. And stroke isn’t the leading cause of death, but it is the leading cause of disability.” We need to continue to bring awareness to strokes and the effect that they have on the patients and also their caregivers.
