“Me and My Bowel Disease” - Skyler, Patient

Skyler started her medical journey at a young age when she started experiencing some scary symptoms like blood in her stool. She was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), an inflammatory bowel disease with no exact cure yet. She went through years of treatment and ultimately decided to have her colon removed and have an illeostomy. Her ostomy is named Ostie!

In Skyler’s episode, she talks about how she had to learn how to advocate for herself and her needs in the medical system. She also describes some specific points along the journey when she was tired, where someone, often her mom, had to step in and be there for her when she couldn’t be there for herself. Skyler also does a great job talking through her experiences and how she has learned from them to improve her medical journey.
