“Insurance and the ER” with Roel, a case manager
Roel (RN, BSN, ACM-RN) has been working as a case manager for 10 years and has worked for three of the biggest health systems in Los Angeles. He currently works in an emergency department as well as for an acute rehabilitation hospital. He is also pursuing a masters degree in health informatics.
During this episode, Roel shares information that is so pertinent and relevant to our current healthcare experiences. He shares ways a patient can improve their visit to the emergency room and mentions things that are often misunderstood or miscommunicated between patients and healthcare professionals in the emergency room. He talks about insurance, and how complicated it can be. He talks about how our current system is confusing and unsustainable, and how he thinks the pandemic is impacting healthcare. He also talks about how the pandemic has specifically affected his practice.
Roel mentioned something really important about healthcare: “You don’t see it but do believe it. We are advocating for you”. Sometimes in the healthcare system, it’s hard to see what is going on behind the scenes. As a patient, you don’t always see the numerous phone calls or the many conversations going on about your care. So many things have to come together before a simple task can be done like giving pain medication, and it’s important to have understanding and ask questions to improve those lines of communication between patients and healthcare professionals.
Roel was a wonderful guest. We joked about it during the podcast, but we opened a pandora box of conversations, and I definitely am going to have him back on the podcast as soon as possible.
